Clayton G.
Peterson
These Mandala paintings are
the product of a unique
collaboration between me,
Clayton G. Peterson, and
photographer Glenn Arvilla
Osborn. Our close friendship
(which began at a time when
we both seriously needed a
friend) developed out of a
deep shared respect for one
another’s abilities and
efforts; and it continues to
this day.
The original designs for
these images were created by
Glenn. He took thousands of
detailed photographs of
flowers, digitally isolated
the essential elements in
each photo, and then created
an almost endless number of
originals. The paintings on
this site are my
interpretation of Glenn’s
designs. Some of the
paintings are fanatically
faithful to the source
material, while others are
changed significantly. We
discussed this work in
detail with one another,
critiquing the digital
compositions, the meanings
inherent in the works, and
the methods for translating
and realizing the designs in
oil paint. Glenn’s death did
not end our collaboration.
It only increased the
significance of continuing
this work. Our aim is to
bring to the world a visual
representation of our shared
appreciation of beauty; and
of what our friendship
brought to each of us.
My work on these paintings
has been a welcome conduit
for helping me to heal after
enduring a dire period in
life. Together with Glen’s
friendship, the creation of
these Mandalas has helped
restore my artistic identity
and sense of self-worth. The
process continues to be a
meditation in motion,
bringing together my outer
and inner worlds. It
re-establishes the harmony
and unity that is inherent
in all of us. For this I
have all my friends, both
present and absent, to
thank.
